Don't Make These Mistakes When Getting Your Alterations Done

I found the perfect dress!

In the last few months leading up to your wedding day, along with reconciling all your final details with guests, vendors, and your design team, you will also need to take time to get your wedding dress altered.

While most alterations can be done in two meetings, budget time for up to three meetings that will take roughly an hour each. During the first meeting, you will be trying on your gown and the seamstress will be making notes on the gown, where to bring the dress in, hem it to, or how much to take out. Your seamstress will also make note of the best way to bustle your gown in the back. At your second appointment, you can expect to try on your altered gown. This will be a time for you to make sure it feels right. You want it to fit you like a glove, not too tight, just right. And you can make sure you like the look of all the alterations.

Follow these three tips to ensure your time with your seamstress is well spent:

  1. Bring the Proper Attire

When you go to your fitting, be sure to bring your shoes and wear your undergarments. This will ensure the dress fits seamlessly with what you will be wearing day-of. This will also ensure the dress hemmed at the perfect height so the dress flows just right.

2. Bring a friend or family member

Bring a trusted friend or family member so they can help make sure the alterations are being done in an aesthetically pleasing way. They will also be able to grab a video of how the dress is to be bustled. While many gowns are simply bustled via a button and loop, some are much more intricate. Capturing the video tutorial is a helpful tool to send to your bridesmaid and wedding planner so day-of bustling is much more efficient.

3. Know Your Numbers

Be prepared for the financial investment of the alterations.  Alterations can cost anywhere from $100 to a couple hundred dollars depending on what is being altered, how much material is being altered, and the type of material being altered. Additionally, get a good feel for how your body has been fluctuating during the last few months.  If you think you may be prone to losing or adding a few inches physically, keep that in mind when working with your seamstress.

Wedding dress alterations are another fun and important part of your wedding planning journey and we hope you find excitement and joy in the process.
